Applied Biosystems Ion GeneStudio S5 System
Reduce Setup Time and Complexity
Set up simple, targeted workflows for assessing microbial genomes, gene panels, exomes, and transcriptomes with the Ion GeneStudio™ S5 next-generation sequencing system. Its cartridge-based reagents and Ion 5 Series Chips make it easy to use and support a range of high-throughput sequencing for clinical research and other applications. Plus, the GeneStudio S5 brings flexible, affordable sequencing to labs that work with smaller panels and have lower sequencing throughput requirements.
- Ion 5 Series Chips can achieve from 2 to 80 million reads per run
- Cartridge-based, plug-and-play reagents help to reduce setup time
- Run and analysis complete in hours
The Ion GeneStudio S5 Series
The GeneStudio series includes three options: the S5, the S5 Plus, and the S5 Prime system. They share the same technology and fluidics, but offer different analysis capabilities.
Speed
Ion GeneStudio S5 Sequencers use the power of semiconductors to produce high-quality sequencing data in just a few hours. When paired with the Ion Chef™ System, it can take as little as 24 hours to go from DNA library to data, with only 45 minutes of actual hands-on time.
Simplicity
S5 Sequencers are easy to use, offering single-day installation, a straightforward user interface, and cartridge-based reagents. Combine them with Ion AmpliSeq™ technology (for target selection), the Ion Chef System (for automated library and template preparation), and Ion Reporter™ Software (for automated variant annotation) to make targeted sequencing simpler than ever.
Small Sample Input
Use as little as 1ng of DNA or RNA from a variety of sample types, including formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded (FFPE) tissue, retrospective samples from fine needle aspirates, and cell-free DNA extracted from blood (cfDNA).
Scalability
All of your targeted sequencing or microbial applications can be performed on a single GeneStudio S5 Sequencer using different Ion 5 Series Chips. This flexibility provides several throughput options to let you transition from small to large projects.
Analysis and Storage Solutions
Make NGS even easier with Torrent Suite and Ion Reporter Software. Plan, monitor, track, and analyze your runs using Torrent Suite Software (pre-installed on the Torrent Server). Then integrate, annotate, and interpret variants using Ion Reporter Software (used locally or from the Thermo Fisher Cloud).

FAQ
Q: Can the GeneStudio S5 run two chips at the same time?
A: No. Analysis with the first chip must be complete before sequencing with a second chip can begin.
Q: Does the GeneStudio S5 have a separate analysis server?
A: No. The analysis server is contained within the sequencer itself.
Q: How long does it take to run an Ion 540 Chip on a GeneStudio S5?
A: 19 hours.
Q: Is the GeneStudio S5 compatible with the Ion Chef System?
A: Yes.
