SCBA Cylinders
Self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA) air cylinders (also referred to as air packs, air tanks, or oxygen cylinders) are one of the main components of an SCBA complete system. Cylinders hold breathable air in atmospheres that are immediately dangerous to life or health (IDLH). The term self-contained means that the SCBA is not dependent on a remote supply of breathable air such as a hose connecting to another air source. SCBA air cylinders are constructed of steel, aluminum, or carbon-fiber composite material and have three pressure options available: high-pressure SCBA cylinders that are pressurized to 4,500 pounds per square inch (PSI), medium-pressure cylinders that are pressurized to 3,000 PSI, and low-pressure cylinders that are pressurized to 2,216 PSI. SCBA air cylinders are designed to provide 30, 45, 60, or 75 minutes of breathing air depending on the environment and intended duration of use.
Air cylinder accessories and replacement parts are also available for purchase separately including, but not limited to, valve assemblies, gaskets, screws, and gauges. SCBA air cylinder components should be evaluated based on usage and environment and should be replaced when original pieces are worn or no longer in workable condition.
