Laboratory freezers are used for short- or long-term storage of biological, pharmaceutical, and other laboratory samples within specific temperature ranges. Designs vary based on sample types and space requirements.

Typically, laboratory freezers:

  • Include upright, chest-style, benchtop, or under-counter models
  • Offer variable structural options (solid or clear doors, shelves or drawers, multiple internal compartments, etc.)
  • Range in capacity from 1.3 cu. ft. (L) to 80 cu. ft. (2,265.35L)
  • Require manual defrosting to remove ice build-up

General-purpose laboratory freezers typically operate in the -10oC to -30oC range and are suitable for general laboratory storage needs. Most laboratory freezers are not equipped with “frost-free” features, because the cyclical warming needed to prevent frost build-up can be detrimental to samples.

Ultra-low-temperature (ULT) freezers operate at temperatures between -80oC and -50oC. ULT freezers are preferred for the long-term storage of tissues and other biological samples. These units are supplied or can be fitted with alarms to warn users of temperature fluctuations or power interruptions.

Enzyme, pharmacy, and plasma freezers typically have integral temperature recording capabilities and alarm systems to help users comply with regulations and requirements from the FDA and other agencies. They may also have alternate internal shelving, sliding drawers, or bins to accommodate product formats.

Flammable- and explosion-proof freezers are needed for the safe storage of volatile materials, pharmaceuticals, reagents, and samples. These units have additional safety features and must often be hard-wired to reduce the likelihood of sparks and ignition.

Additional cold storage options are available for controlled freezing of plasma and other samples and for cryogenic storage using liquid nitrogen systems.
