Value of Point-of-Care Testing in Diabetes Management

Managing patients diagnosed with diabetes according to the American Diabetes Association (ADA) Standards of Care guidelines is critically important. However, overall testing compliance is poor, with only 26.7% of patients diagnosed with diabetes meeting targets for glycemic, blood pressure, or cholesterol control.

The number of adults with diabetes is expected to increase to 700 million by 2045. In the U.S. alone, it may affect as many as one in three adults. Diabetes leads to changes and symptoms in multiple organ systems in the body, which takes patient and healthcare team coordination to monitor and treat effectively. Most often, diabetic patients are seen and managed in primary care practices that may be under heavy time and cost containment constraints.

This webinar will discuss several studies suggesting that point-of-care testing for HbA1c has multiple benefits. Outcomes indicate that patients tested at the point of care had better glycemic control and a greater understanding of and satisfaction with the state of their disease and treatment. Increased compliance with ADA testing frequency, improved operational efficiencies, and better care for underprivileged populations have also been observed in studies of point-of-care testing.

Dr. Vivian A. Fonseca is professor of medicine, assistant dean for clinical research, the Tullis-Tulane alumni chair in diabetes, and chief of the Section of Endocrinology at Tulane University Medical Center in New Orleans, Louisiana. He was president for science and medicine for the American Diabetes Association (ADA) in 2012 and has served on the board of directors and several committees. Fonseca has played a significant role in developing ADA and American Association of Clinical Endocrinology guidelines for treating diabetes, managing chronic disease and clinical trials after natural disasters, and bringing attention to the global epidemic of diabetes, particularly in Asia.
