Transformation experiments contain antibiotics which are used for the selection of transformed bacteria. Students who have allergies to antibiotics such as penicilllin, ampicillin, kanamycin or tetracycine should not participate in this experiment. All components intended for educational research only. They are not to be used for diagnostic or drug purposes, nor administered to or consumed by humans or animals.

Includes: instructions, BactoBeads™, plasmid DNA, IPTG, ampicillin, transformation solution, ReadyPour™ agar, Luria broth, petri dishes, sterile pipets and loops

Requires :

  • Transformants acquire green (GFP) or blue (BFP) fluorescent protein genes contained in two different plasmids; the GFP gene was mutated to produce the blue protein
  • Transformed cells are selected based on antibiotic resistance
  • Colonies which express GFP or BFP protein are visibly green and pale blue and will fluoresce when exposed to long-wave UV light
