How Blood Tube Holders Work

When drawing blood from a patient, the phlebotomist attaches the blood collection needle to a blood tube holder. This provides a stable interface between the needle and the evacuated tubes or blood culture media bottles into which the specimen is being collected.

When using evacuated tubes or bottles, one end of the needle is inserted into the patient’s vein and the other end is injected into the tube stopper with the blood tube holder attached to access the vacuum. The attached blood tube holder is designed with flanged wings around its opening that help the phlebotomist keep the needle in position while changing or removing blood collection tubes.

The phlebotomist applies pressure to oppose the force required to pierce the tube stopper and uses pressure in the opposite direction when removing the tube from the back of the needle. The latter action is used frequently when collecting multiple blood tubes in a single draw. After the needle is removed from the patient’s vein, the clinician closes the blood collection tube holder over the needle to avoid being stuck before disposing of it in a sharps container.

Sizes

Blood tube holders are available in regular and smaller or pediatric sizes. However, this size difference is related more to the size of the evacuated tube being used than to the age of the patient. Pediatric blood collection tube holders are sized for use with smaller evacuated tubes, typically with diameters less than 13 millimeters. The regular tube holders can accommodate tubes with 13- or 16- millimeter diameters.

Single- or Multi-Use

Some blood collection tube holders are intended for a single use. This usually applies to tube holders with pre-attached blood collection needles. Many of these devices also include a safety feature that covers or blocks the needle to help prevent accidental needlesticks.

Other Blood Tube Holders

Some blood samples must be collected with a syringe or are drawn from an indwelling port or catheter. Blood collection tube holders may be fitted with Luer adapters to act as access devices. Other holders may be designed for transferring blood from a syringe to an evacuated tube. Winged collection sets are also available with pre-attached tube holders for convenience.
