Description

Description

  • Analyze how solute size and concentration affect diffusion across semi-permeable membranes and how these processes affect water potential
  • Calculate water potential of plant cells
  • Class size: 40 students working in groups of 4
Part A: Dialysis experiments utilizing two dyes of different molecular weights visually demonstrate the size selectivity of membranes. Experiments also demonstrate changes in the equilibrium of the diffusible dye as it is removed from system.
Part B: Experiment approximates an osmotic system by demonstrating net flow of water through a dialysis membrane.
Part C: Involves the calculation of potato cell water potential from experimental data.
