Lab-Aids™ Dialysis Experiment Kit

Observe diffusion of a solute through a semi-permeable membrane, remove an inorganic salt from a colloid and test for presence of chloride ions and starch with simple color tests.
Supplier: Lab-Aids™ 23
Includes: Kit provides sufficient materials for thirty individual experiments: 12 Chemplates™ (each with a spatula); 30 dialysis membrane tubes; 30 plastic containers; two 170g bottles of sodium chloride; a 28g bottle of silver nitrate; two 170g bottles of starch suspension; a 56g bottle of iodine solution; a 28g bottle of deionized water; 30 student instructions/worksheets; instructions and background information. Bottles are drop-controlled.
Description
Chemical and biological theories come to life in this natural continuation to the study of osmosis and diffusion. In this activity, students will:
- Use a colloidal solution of starch and sodium chloride to vividly observe dialysis
- Observe diffusion of a solute through a semi-permeable membrane
- Remove an inorganic salt from a colloid
- Test for the presence of chloride ions and starch with simple color tests
Invidualized worksheets guide students through the step-by-step procedure in this self-directed lab activity.
