WARNING: This product can expose you to chemicals including Strong Inorganic Acid Mists containing Sulfuric Acid, which are known to the State of California to cause cancer.

In this demonstration, sulfuric acid is poured on a mixture of sucrose and sodium carbonate. The resultant reaction produces a large amount of black foam, as well as steam and smoke! The reaction in this experiment is:

C12H22O11 11H2SO4 → 12C 11H2SO4 11H2O

In this reaction, the acid dehydrates the sucrose, leaving only the carbon. Water vapor, and possibly some sulfur dioxide, are given off, causing the formation of a foam.

1 x 75g sucrose, granular, 1 x 25mL sulfuric acid, concentrate un1830
